Matosinhos Orchesta Jazz
|
Founded in 1999, Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra is one of the most dynamic orchestras in the current jazz scene. With support from Matosinhos Municipal Council, it began operating as an artists’ orchestra, disclosing the compositions and arrangements of its directors - Carlos Azevedo and Pedro Guedes. Participation in Porto 2001 European Capital of Culture was the first step towards extending its work base, and since then has increasingly becoming a forum for composers who have given birth to a specific national repertoire for this type of musical formation. Later, the orchestra signed a protocol with the Casa da Música, which favoured the development of diverse projects, in collaboration with leading international musicians. With a repertoire that includes original compositions and arrangements, as well as works by well-known composers, the OJM’s unique character is revealed through its versatility - that enables it to assume all these vocations and play the role of a national jazz orchestra, presenting repertoires from all aesthetic variants and all jazz periods. OJM has worked regularly in the main Portuguese performance venues and also in Brussels, Milan and New York. It was the first Portuguese band to attend an American jazz festival (JVC Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall in 2007), and performed seasons in the New York clubs, Jazz Gallery, Jazz Standard, Iridium and the legendary Birdland. In this concert, OJM will present an essential part of its repertoire - original music by its directors Carlos Azevedo and Pedro Guedes. Program dedicated to historical composers for big band and a new chapter in the collaboration with Lee Konitz and Ohad Talmor. Curator: Meghan Curvelo Partner: Casa da Música |
