Circumstance is an international collective of artists working in the areas of contemporary performance, theatre, interactive design, musical composition, portable electronic and localisation and broadcasting systems. They’re renowned for creating performances in the form of subtle 'flash mobs', using mobile electronics devices in public spaces. A Folded Path is a pedestrian symphony for 30 loudspeakers, transported by the audience through the streets of Porto, which will be filled with delicate and sparkling musical strings as the mobile symphony traverses the city. The spectators are invited to travel to the Largo Mompilher (at the top of the Rua da Picaria) and pick up a handmade wooden loudspeaker and then take a trip with this box in their hands. This loudspeaker will become a voice in the midst of a walking orchestra, harmonising itself with the speakers carried by others. Each speaker plays different elements within a musical score controlled via satellite in relation to the location, the participants’ trajectory manipulates the composition; movement within the group changes the acoustic relations between the loudspeakers. The audience is transformed into an orchestra. This project involves the musical participation of Jorge Queijo.
